Shama Obaid Islam, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in the Tariq Rahman-led government in Bangladesh, has issued a statement regarding the return of Sheikh Hasina. The minister said- “If she (Sheikh Hasina) surrenders, steps will be taken as per the existing law. She will have to go to jail. The law will take its course.” Shama has made it clear that if Sheikh Hasina surrenders, the government will proceed completely within the legal framework.

Sheikh Hasina has said that she along with other exiled Awami League leaders are planning to return to Bangladesh voluntarily around December. Sheikh Hasina had said- “When I return to Bangladesh, they can arrest me, they can even kill me. Still, I have to go.” Sheikh Hasina further said, “My party leaders and workers are being subjected to severe repression. If death comes, I want it to come to my own land, where my parents are buried and where their blood was shed.”
