WhatsApp’s big allegation on the Russian government, said- an attempt was made to block the app completely
Attempts to block WhatsApp in Russia WhatsApp, the world’s most popular messaging app, on Thursday alleged that Russia “tried to completely block” the messaging app in the country to push users to a competing government-controlled service, which may have affected 100 million people.

Critics and rights activists say the ban is a clear attempt by the Kremlin to increase control and surveillance over Internet use in Russia, amid a broader crackdown on dissent during the Ukraine invasion. The latest developments come as Russia’s internet watchdog said on Tuesday (Feb 10) it would “gradually crack down” on the Telegram messaging platform, which it said did not comply with laws.
Moscow is trying to encourage Russians to use more tightly controlled domestic online services. It has threatened several internet platforms with forced slowdowns or outright bans if they do not comply with Russian laws, including laws requiring Russian users to store data inside the country.
WhatsApp wrote in an ex-post, “Today the Russian government attempted to block WhatsApp entirely in order to push people toward a government surveillance app. Attempting to cut off over 100 million users from private and secure communications is a backward step and will only further reduce the safety of people in Russia. We are doing everything we can to keep users connected.”
