Whatsapp Business Will Now Charge Based On AI Usage, Not Messages Exchanged From Aug 1

Meta is introducing a major change to the way businesses pay for AI-powered customer interactions on WhatsApp. Starting August 1, 2026, companies using the Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp Business will be charged based on AI token consumption rather than the number of messages exchanged. The move signals Meta’s growing focus on monetising artificial intelligence services as AI becomes a central part of customer support, sales and marketing operations.

The new pricing structure comes just weeks after Meta expanded the availability of its AI-powered business agent globally, allowing businesses to automate customer conversations directly through WhatsApp.

What Is Changing?

Currently, businesses are generally billed based on messaging activity on the WhatsApp Business Platform. Under the new model, companies using the Meta Business Agent will instead be charged according to the number of AI tokens consumed during conversations.

In AI systems, tokens are units of text processed by a language model. The more complex or lengthy a customer interaction is, the more tokens are consumed. Meta says the new model better reflects the actual computing resources required to generate AI responses.

What Can The Meta Business Agent Do?

The Meta Business Agent is designed to automate a wide range of customer-facing tasks. Businesses can use it to answer queries, recommend products, schedule appointments, qualify leads, provide round-the-clock support and assist customers throughout the buying journey.

The AI agent can also transfer conversations to human representatives when required, creating a hybrid customer service model that combines automation with human oversight.

India remains one of WhatsApp’s largest and most important markets. With millions of businesses already using WhatsApp for customer engagement, Meta sees significant opportunities to expand AI-driven commerce and support services through the platform.

The AI pricing update is not the only change planned for WhatsApp Business. Meta has also announced that certain business messaging charges that were previously waived will be reintroduced from October 1, 2026.
