Voting for Vijaypur seat was held on 13 November. Ram Niwas Rawat had won the assembly elections on Congress ticket. However, after this he joined BJP and resigned from the membership of the Assembly. BJP gave him ticket in the by-election. However, he had to face defeat in this election.

Ram Niwas Rawat is counted among the big leaders of Madhya Pradesh. He has been a member of the Legislative Assembly 6 times. His displeasure with Congress came to the fore just before the Lok Sabha elections. He was angry because Satyapal Singh Sikarwar got the Morena-Sheopur Lok Sabha seat. Ramniwas has contested Assembly elections 8 times and Lok Sabha elections 2 times.
