When the limits of decorum were broken in films, abuses rained openly

New Delhi. The recently released film ‘Dhurandhar’ and its sequel ‘Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge’ are in the news more for the abuses used in the dialogues than for their story. There is a debate on this on social media, some people call it realistic and some consider it an overdose. However, the use of crude and sharp language in films is not a new trend. Even before this, many such films have come which created a distinct identity in cinema with their bold dialogue delivery.

Gangs of Wasseypur – ‘Gold Standard’ of desi abuses
This film of Anurag Kashyap is considered to be the biggest example of use of abuses. The rustic language of Bihar and raw dialogues made the film real and raw. Here abuses were not just words, but became a part of the story.

Delhi Belly – A bold style of urban slang
Produced by Aamir Khan, this dark comedy film brought urban abuses into the mainstream. The open use of words like ‘F-word’ was quite shocking at that time, but the youth liked it very much.

Omkara – spiciness in desi dialect
Vishal Bhardwaj presented Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ in a desi style and used the harsh language and abuses of Uttar Pradesh. This made the characters seem more real and impressive.

Bandit Queen – Bitter truth surrounded by controversies
In this film of Shekhar Kapur, the life of Phoolan Devi was shown without any hesitation. There was a long battle with the censor board regarding its language and scenes, but the film gave a new definition of realism in cinema.

Udta Punjab – Raw language showing the truth of the system
In this film based on the drug crisis of Punjab, abuses were used liberally to show the frustration and anger of the characters. Its fight with the Censor Board was also much talked about.

Satya – the real language of the underworld
This cult classic film by Ram Gopal Varma makes excellent use of street language and abuses to depict the harsh reality of the Mumbai underworld. This further strengthened the scary image of the characters.

Animal – new trend of aggressive language
This Ranbir Kapoor starrer has created a lot of controversy in recent times with its violent dialogues and sharp language. This film of Sandeep Reddy Vanga gave a new dimension to ‘verbal aggression’ in big budget cinema.




  • Amidst the ongoing debate regarding ‘Dhurandhar’, it is clear that abuses have always been used in films to make the story more real and effective. The only difference is that its intensity and acceptability has changed with time.
