Where was the epicentre of the earthquake felt in Kolkata and Bengal today?

Tremors felt across Kolkata and several parts of West Bengal on Friday afternoon were linked to a seismic event estimated at magnitude 5.0. According to preliminary alert systems, the earthquake occurred around 1:22 PM on February 27, with the epicentre located approximately 92.9 km away from Kolkata.

Map-based alert data indicated that the epicentre was situated towards the India–Bangladesh border region, with tremors also reported near Dhaka. Users of the Earthquake Network app logged over 40 reports within a 54 km radius of Dhaka, suggesting the shaking was felt across a wide stretch of the Bengal belt.

The event comes amid heightened seismic activity in the region over the past few days. On February 26, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck West Sikkim near Gyalshing, sending tremors across North Bengal and parts of Bangladesh. Several smaller aftershocks were also recorded in the Sikkim-Darjeeling area.

As of now, there have been no confirmed reports of major damage or casualties linked to the latest tremor. Authorities are monitoring the situation and further official confirmation on the epicentre and depth is awaited.
