Alcohol is becoming a major cause of mouth cancer

In this study, data was collected from six different cancer centers in India between 2010 and 2021. It included 1,803 men who had buccal mucosa cancer and compared them with 1,903 men who did not have cancer. The researchers also analyzed the effects of foreign liquors like beer and whiskey as well as local liquors like Desi Daru, Tharra and Mahua. Let us tell you that alcohol consumption was found to be less in women, that is why the study focused only on men.

Even drinking less is not safe

Even after excluding tobacco and other factors, it was found that men who drank alcohol had a 68% higher risk of this cancer compared to non-drinkers. The most surprising thing is that people who drank less than 9 grams of alcohol a day (i.e. less than one standard drink) were found to have a significantly higher risk of cancer.

Country liquor is more dangerous

The study found that those who drink locally made liquor (desi daru and tharra) are most at risk. The risk of oral cancer among country liquor drinkers was found to be almost double that of non-drinkers. However, the risk remained consistent among those who drank beer and whiskey, even if they drank small amounts.

‘Cocktail’ of alcohol and tobacco can become fatal

The study found a strong link between alcohol and tobacco. Men who use both alcohol and tobacco are at greater risk than those who use only one substance. Researchers estimate that more than 60% of buccal mucosa cancer cases are caused by the combined use of alcohol and chewing tobacco. At the same time, about 11.3% of this cancer cases in India are due to alcohol consumption only.
