Lucknow: In the winter session of the UP Assembly, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya presented the government’s stand on codeine syrup in detail in the Legislative Council today. He said that the government is adopting a policy of zero tolerance against elements who play with the health of the youth.

Leader of the House clarified that a three-member STF (Special Task Force) team has been formed to stop smuggling and illegal sale of cough syrup containing codeine. Strict instructions have been given to the Drug Administration Department to digitally tally the stock of codeine syrup at all medical stores and if it is found being sold without a doctor’s prescription, the license of the concerned store should be canceled immediately.

Shri Maurya said that to stop smuggling to other states through UP, the police department has been instructed to increase the strictness at the check posts, strictest action will be ensured against those selling poison in the name of medicine. Maurya clearly said that many large wholesale licenses of cough syrup containing codeine were distributed in the year 2016 during the Samajwadi government, at that time the rules were ignored, due to which youth and children are suffering the consequences today.

Keshav Prasad Maurya clarified that the policy of the double engine government is zero tolerance towards crime, the Prime Minister of the country and the Chief Minister of the state have a clear opinion that the criminal belongs to any party, religion or caste, whether in the country or abroad, he will not be spared, action will be taken not only under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, but also under the NDPS Act and Gangster Act.

Shri Maurya also said that the roots of this black drug trade lie in the wholesale licenses distributed during the Samajwadi government in 2016. He said that the work of distributing poison which started under political patronage at that time is now being accounted for. Hi-tech cyber police stations have been established in every division and major districts of the state. Cyber ​​Helpline 1930 has been further strengthened, helping in freezing the money of fraud victims immediately. A huge amount of about Rs 630 crore has been frozen in various bank accounts. More than 90,000 suspicious bank accounts have been identified across the state and transactions on them have been stopped.
