Nowadays, along with physical tickets, people are also using digital tickets a lot. But do you know that both types of tickets have their own different rules? To make your journey comfortable and hassle-free, you must be aware of all these rules, otherwise you may have to face unnecessary difficulties in the train.

Physical Ticket and its Terms:

When you buy a ‘physical’ i.e. paper ticket from a railway counter or from an authorized agent, it is important to keep a few things in mind:

• Carry the original: You must always carry the original copy of your ticket with you during your journey. Photocopies or photographs taken on mobile phones are often not considered valid.
• TTE Checking: It is mandatory to show your physical ticket to the Travel Ticket Examiner (TTE) in the train when they check the ticket.
• No Transfer: Physical tickets are often not transferable, meaning that no other person can travel on that ticket unless special rules of the Railways permit it.
• When lost: If the physical ticket gets lost, there can be problems. The rules for re-issuing it are strict, and you may also have to pay a fine.

Digital Ticket (e-Ticket/Mobile Ticket) and its Terms:

Nowadays, most people use digital tickets, such as e-tickets booked from IRCTC or mobile tickets. Their rules are slightly different:

• Show on mobile: The biggest convenience of digital ticket is that you do not need to print it out. You can also show the ticket to TTE on your smartphone or laptop.
• Valid ID Proof: It is extremely important for you to carry a valid photo ID proof (like Aadhar Card, Voter ID, PAN Card, Driving License) while traveling with a digital ticket. TTE does ask for ID proof, and without it your ticket will not be considered valid.
• PPR Number/Ticket SMS: Sometimes the SMS of the ticket is also considered valid, which contains the PNR number and journey information.
• Boarding Station: Your boarding station is also mentioned on the digital ticket, and the journey has to start from there, unless you get it changed earlier.
