Hong Kong’s Cantonese restaurant Chairman has been named Asia’s best restaurant in the 14th edition of the awards voted by hundreds of experts comprising food writers, critics, chefs and restaurateurs.
Chairman’s chef-owner Danny Yip paid tribute to his team, where 60 to 70% have worked at least 10 years at the 17-year-old restaurant, Channel News Asia reported.
“Winning the top award makes our hard work and staying in the industry worthwhile. I’m very happy to see that the top two restaurants are in Hong Kong,” Yip said.
Hong Kong’s Wing ranked second in Asia, followed by Thailand’s Gaggan.
Chairman at 198 Wellington Street is renowned for its signature steamed crab with Huadiao and chicken fat. It prioritizes high-quality, seasonal, and organic ingredients sourced locally.
Voted by the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, an influential, gender-balanced group of more than 350 industry experts, this year’s list features restaurants from 17 cities across the region with three cities appearing on the 1-50 ranking for the first time.
Bangkok leads this year’s list with nine restaurants, followed by Tokyo with seven entries.
Hong Kong, Seoul and Singapore are each represented with six establishments.
