Airline pilots were the highest-paid workers outside healthcare, with average annual wages of $288,600. Chief executives followed at $269,600.

Athletes ranked third, with average annual wages of $206,200, although the figure is skewed by top earners in the category. The typical athlete, measured by the median, earns about $67,000 a year.

Lawyers, often regarded as one of the country’s highest-paying professions, ranked sixth among non-health care occupations, with average annual wages of $185,800.

Financial managers, marketing managers, and computer and information systems managers also ranked among the top 10.

The latest estimates are for May 2025. Annual wages include tips and commissions but exclude overtime and most bonuses.
