Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on December 26, 2024. His funeral will take place at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi on Saturday afternoon. Dr Singh served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, succeeding Atal Bihari Vajpayee. His tenure is best remembered for his strong leadership during economic crises and his significant efforts to modernize India's economy. After leaving office, he retired from public life and left behind a legacy of development and global recognition for India.
Throughout his career, he was known for pushing major reforms, including economic liberalization and the landmark India-US civil nuclear deal. ,
Despite facing criticism for his calm leadership style, he remained committed to his duties. He and his family were known to stay away from the media spotlight even during his tenure.
Dr. Singh was married to Gursharan Kaur in 1958. They have three daughters: Upinder, Daman and Amrit. The eldest daughter Upinder Singh is a renowned history professor and dean of the faculty at Ashoka University. He has written several books and was awarded the Infosys Prize for Social Sciences in 2009. She is married to writer Vijay Tankha. The second daughter, Amrit Singh, is a prominent human rights lawyer and law professor at Stanford University. He has worked on many global human rights issues. The youngest daughter Daman Singh is a professional writer. He has written books such as The Last Frontier and Strictly Personal, which is a biography of his parents. She is married to Ashok Patnaik, who is an IPS officer.
