Who is Motaleb Shikder? Bangladesh student leader shot in head days after Osman Hadi’s killing
Bangladesh has witnessed another disturbing incident of political violence with the shooting of student and labour leader Muhammad Motaleb Sikdar in Khulna, just days after the killing of Usman Hadi. The attack has heightened concerns over law and order as political tensions continue to rise ahead of upcoming polls.
Who is Motaleb Shikder?
Motaleb Shikder, also reported as Muhammad Motaleb Sikder, is a senior leader associated with the student-led National Citizen Party (NCP). He plays a key role in the party’s labour organisation, Caste Workers Powerwhere he serves as a central organiser and the Khulna divisional convener.
Within political circles, Shikder is known for mobilising labour groups and coordinating organisational activities at the divisional level. At the time of the attack, he was actively involved in preparations for a major divisional labour rally planned by the NCP in Khulna.
What happened in Khulna?
According to reports published by Prothom Hellothe shooting took place around 11:45 am on Monday at a house in the Sonadanga area of Khulna. Unidentified gunmen allegedly opened fire on Shikder, hitting him on the left side of his head before fleeing the scene.
Saif Nawaz, an organiser of the NCP’s Khulna metropolitan unit, confirmed Shikder’s identity and position within the party, stating that the attack occurred while he was engaged in organisational work related to the upcoming rally.
Condition and medical treatment
After sustaining the gunshot wound, Shikder was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. Later, he was taken to City Diagnostic Centre for a CT scan of his head.
Animesh Mandal, Inspector (Investigation) at Police Stationconfirmed the incident and said that investigations are currently underway. Authorities have not yet disclosed details about the attackers or the motive behind the shooting.
