Who is Sitanshu Kotak? Know about BCCI’s top choice for Team India batting coach role
New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering domestic stalwart Sitanshu Kotak as the top choice candidate for the role of Team India batting coach. According to multiple media reports in the past few days, Indian cricket board, during a review meeting on January 11, finalised the decision of strengthening Gautam Gambhir’s support staff in the aftermath of India’s dismal run recently.
Team India went down in the home Test series against New Zealand, losing it 0-3 and the recent Border Gavaskar Trophy drubbing in Australia pushed them against the wall, raising a question on their playing tactics and strategies especially in the red-ball format. While the bowling looked close to decent, batting department disappointed one and all.
Report confirms BCCI’s seriousness
According to a report in the Times of IndiaBCCI is seriously exploring the possibility of appointing Kotak as an additional force in the batting support staff. The veteran domestic player is currently the head coach of the India A team. Kotak, who has plenty of proven experience as a coach, has previously coached the national side back in 2023 during India’s T20I tour to Ireland and another tour to South Africa in the same year.
Know about Sitanshu Kotak
Sitanshu Kotak captained Saurashtra during his playing days and was one of their most dependable batters. Considering a domestic stalwart, Kotak amassed 8061 runs in 130 first-class matches at an impressive average of 41.76. During his hey days as a player, he smashed 15 centuries and 55 half-centuries from 1992-93 season to 2013 season.
Post his retirement, the veteran cricket player entered full-time coaching taking the role at his state team Saurashtra. Kotak guided Saurashtra to their first-ever Ranji Trophy title in 2020 and also served as batting coach at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. The former southpaw also served as the head coach of the India A team, replacing former Indian head coach Rahul Dravid in the role. Kotak has also served as the assistant coach of the Gujarat Lions, now defunct, in Indian Premier League 2017.
