Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman bin Hadi, who was likely to contest from Dhaka-8 constituency as an independent candidate, was shot in the Bijoynagar area on Friday afternoon.
Sharif Osman bin Hadi was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition after being shot in the Box Culvert Road area of Bijoynagar, Bangladeshi media reports said. Unidentified miscreants on a motorbike opened fire at him around 2:25 pm, shortly after Jummah prayers. He was on life support as the bullet remains inside his head, news reports quoted doctors at the Dhaka Medical College as saying. The entry wound was near his left ear, and the Inquilab Mancha coordinator has lost a lot of blood.
Inquilab Mancha is an alliance of smaller, often Islamist-leaning political groups and individuals. Their political line focuses on Islamic and nationalist principles and advocating for political change in Bangladesh. The group’s goals include building a state based on justice and protecting national independence and sovereignty and describes itself as a revolution-inspired cultural platform.. The reports added that last November, Hadi had said on Facebook that he had received threats from 30 foreign numbers.
In a Facebook post late on November 13, Hadi blamed the Awami League, writing, “In the last three hours, Awami League killers have called and texted my number from at least 30 foreign numbers. The summary of which is – I am being kept under surveillance at all times. They will burn my house. They will rape my mother, sister and wife and kill me.”
Who is Osman Hadi?
Osman bin Hadi was a student of the Department of Political Science at Dhaka University in the 2010-2011 academic year, BD News 24 said. He was a key figure in the 2024 anti-discrimination movement.
Hadi was born to a madrasa teacher in Nalchitty village of Jhalakathi district. His education at Nesarabad Kamil Madrasa and he tutored at many coaching centres and private universities, BD News 24 said. He has written many books and focused on Bangladesh’s cultural arenas ahead of the July protests. He has been vocal against both the Bangladeshi Amry as well as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He had proposed the formation of a national government, criticizing the interim government’s weaknesses and apparent lack of change, reports said.
