Who was Gopinath Bordoloi?

Gopinath Bordoloi’s full name was Gopinath Bordoloi. Bordoloi, with the support of Mahatma Gandhi and other national leaders, led a movement through public interest and non-violence, which ultimately succeeded in keeping Assam included in the Union of India.

Even after independence, Bordoloi did important work for the development of Assam. He strengthened the infrastructure in sectors like education, health and agriculture. Under his leadership, medical colleges, engineering colleges and agricultural education were established, which provided better opportunities to the youth of Assam.

Former Governor of Assam gave ‘popular’ name to Gopinath

Due to Gopinath’s birth and works, former Assam Governor Jairam Das honored him with the name ‘Lokpriya’. Bordoloi was also awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour, in 1999. His contribution is still remembered with respect and honor in both Assam and India.
