Gill’s idea ‘dropped’, after the World Cup who will be the contender for captaincy in place of Surya?

Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav: Team India’s announcement for T20 World Cup 2026 has sparked a new debate. The name of Test-ODI team captain and T20 format vice-captain Shubman Gill was not included in the 15-member team. After this decision of the selectors, it seems that Gill’s claim for future captaincy in this format is coming to an end.

After the Test, the command of the ODI team was given to Shubman Gill. Before the three-match ODI series in Australia, he was made the captain of the ODI team in place of Rohit Sharma. After this, he was made the vice-captain of the T20 team, so it seemed that BCCI wanted to make Gill the face of the Indian team. Even before Gill, BCCI had conducted such experiments, which were quite successful. Same thing happened in the case of Virat Kohli. But Gill disappointed with the bat in the recent T20 series and many batsmen behind him were knocking the door of the team, so BCCI thought it appropriate to keep Gill out for the ‘Combination’.

Bad form was the cause of trouble

T20 World Cup is to be played in 2026 under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav. BCCI was looking at Gill as the future captain in place of 35-year-old Suryakumar, but Gill has not done justice to his talent for some time. Gill was given the responsibility of opening after breaking the pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, where he was not successful.

The game of T20 format has changed completely and this is the reason why Gill was seen batting against his nature many times and he had to pay the price for this by losing his wicket. Not only this, due to this the team also had to face a lot of difficulties.

Sanju’s return will provide many options

In the absence of Gill, Sanju was given a place in the last match against South Africa and he capitalized on it with both hands.

Sanju is not only an excellent batsman but also plays the role of wicketkeeper. In such a situation, if Sanju remains in the team, then there is always an option to include an extra batsman or bowler in terms of team combination. Perhaps in view of a big tournament like the World Cup, the selectors finally decided to drop the Gill plan and included Sanju in the team.

Who is the next captain?

The team has achieved many successes under the captaincy of Surya, but the bat of the captain himself has remained silent for a long time. As a batsman, Surya was more effective in this team. But his batting has been affected due to the burden of captaincy. According to some reports, BCCI may start searching for another captain after the World Cup. Players with such experience are not visible in the current team. If BCCI considers the name of Shreyas Iyer, then definitely the team can get a better option, but BCCI has not yet opened its cards regarding this.
