After West Bengal Governor RN Ravi dissolved the state assembly after its term ended on May 7, the BJP on Thursday said the name of the next chief minister will be announced after the legislature party meeting on Friday, May 8.
The special thing is that the current West Bengal Assembly was formed in May 2021, when Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress won power in the state for the third consecutive time.
After the recently held two-phase elections, the term of the current assembly has officially ended. Parliamentary Affairs Department has issued this notification.
The new CM of West Bengal will take oath on May 9, preparations are underway for the swearing-in ceremony.
After winning with an overwhelming majority, the BJP is preparing to form its first government in the state and has expedited plans for the swearing-in ceremony. The swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Minister and Council of Ministers is to be held on Saturday, May 9, on the birth anniversary of Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore. Preparations for the ceremony are going on at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. Necessary administrative meetings are underway, and tight security arrangements are in place for the event. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, senior BJP leaders and Chief Ministers of other states are likely to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
List of top contenders for the post of Chief Minister
Suvendu Adhikari
Current opposition leader, Suvendu Adhikari is being considered a strong candidate for the post of Chief Minister. Known for his political management and influence, he is contesting from Nandigram and Bhawanipur, taking on Mamata Banerjee on high-profile seats. He has previously been a senior minister in the TMC government and represented Tamluk as MP.
Samik Bhattacharya
BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya is also in the race. With RSS background and long political experience, he has helped in growing the party in different sections of the society. A Rajya Sabha member since 2024, he is credited with increasing the BJP’s presence in West Bengal.
Dilip Ghosh
Former BJP state president, Dilip Ghosh is getting strong support from grassroots party workers. BJP achieved huge gains in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and 2021 Assembly elections under his leadership. He is contesting elections from Kharagpur Sadar and remains an important leader within the party.
Roopa Ganguly
Former Rajya Sabha MP and well-known personality Roopa Ganguly is also another possible contender. Popular among urban voters, she is contesting from Sonarpur South. She was earlier the leader of the party’s women’s wing and has been associated with BJP for more than a decade.
Nisith Pramanik
Former Union Minister Nisith Pramanik is also being seen as an important contender. Representing North Bengal, he has played a key role in strengthening the party’s presence in the region, especially in Cooch Behar. This time, he is contesting from Mathabhanga.
Agnimitra Paul
Asansol South MLA and BJP State Vice President Agnimitra Paul is also among the top contenders. She is known for her active participation in protests and campaigns and has emerged as a well-known and outspoken face of the party’s state unit.
