New Delhi. Indian-origin Anita Anand has now withdrawn from the race for the post of Prime Minister in Canada. Anita Anand was being seen as a replacement for Justin Trudeau. Before him, two other people have also withdrawn from this race. In such a situation, who will replace Trudeau? This race has become interesting now. Anita Anand's statement comes within a few days of Trudeau offering to resign from the post of Prime Minister. She has also confirmed that she will not contest the next elections. Anita Anand is the MP from Oakville, Ontario. He said that while the Prime Minister has decided to move forward, the time has come for me to do the same.

Born to a Tamil father and a Punjabi mother, 57-year-old Anita held several portfolios in Justin Trudeau's cabinet. Since being included in the Trudeau cabinet, Anand has held ministries such as public service and procurement and defence. He was also made the Chairman of the Treasury Board in 2024. As Defense Minister, Anand played a key role in leading global efforts to provide aid to Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia.

Talking about her roots, she said that many people had written to her saying that someone of Indian-origin could not win Oakville. Yet I won not once, but twice at Oakville since 2019. She said that I will keep this honor in my heart forever. Her parents, who were both doctors, immigrated to Canada. Anand's grandfather was a freedom fighter from Tamil Nadu.

It is noteworthy that two other major contenders, Foreign Minister Melanie Joy and Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, also announced their decision to stay out of the race last week. Before entering politics in 2019, Anand was a visiting lecturer at Yale University and professor of law at the University of Toronto.
