‘Why are US dollars being spent on AI in India?’ Sharp question from someone close to Trump
New Delhi: Amid the ongoing tussle over the trade deal between America and India, a sharp statement from former White House trade advisor Peter Navarro, close to former US President Donald Trump, has come to light. Navarro has raised questions about the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) services in India and the US dollars being spent on it. He says that this situation goes against American economic interests.
This comment of Navarro has come at a time when talks between India and America are stuck on many issues related to trade, technology and tariffs. His statements on topics like AI, energy and import duty have once again sparked a new debate in the relations between the two countries.
AI running on American soil, then why payment in India?
Peter Navarro said that it is beyond his understanding why American citizens are paying for AI services being provided in India. He claimed that major AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini run on American soil and use American electricity, water and other resources. According to Navarro, in such a situation, the economic benefits associated with these services should remain in America only.
Describing this situation as against American economic policy, he said that America’s resources are being used due to this, but the profits are going to other markets.
India becomes a big market for AI
India is fast emerging as a large and attractive market for AI. Here almost every big tech company is launching its AI models and the use of AI is increasing rapidly among common people also. According to reports, many paid AI subscriptions from Google and OpenAI are being made available in India for free or through bundled offers with telecom companies, further increasing the reach of AI.
Expressed displeasure over oil purchase from Russia
Apart from AI, Navarro also raised questions on India buying crude oil from Russia. He alleged that India is supporting Russia’s economy by buying oil at cheap prices. This statement has come at a time when western countries have imposed many economic sanctions on Russia.
Called India ‘Maharaja of Tariff’
Peter Navarro once again called India the ‘Maharaja of Tariffs’. He alleged that India imposes excessive import duties on American products, due to which American companies have to suffer huge losses. This statement can also further complicate the ongoing talks on trade deal between the two countries.
India’s strengthening AI ecosystem
Today India has joined the world’s top AI ecosystem. More than 2,000 AI companies and startups are active in the country. Major platforms like Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT are being widely used in India. According to the report, the number of GenAI startups in the country has exceeded 890 and this figure is continuously increasing.
