Why did Amit Shah call him the great hero of Assam? The courage of Gopinath Bordoloi which every Indian should know
News India Live, Digital Desk: Whenever we talk about India’s independence and integration of states, the name of Sardar Patel often comes to our mind. But in the Northeast of India, especially in Assam, another name equally big and respectable is Gopinath Bordoloi. Amit Shah recently paid tribute to him in Assam, but the question is, how much does the new generation know about this ‘popular’ public leader? The reality is that today, if Assam and the entire North-East is an unbreakable part of India, then a huge credit for it goes to the unwavering courage of Bordoloi ji. Those difficult times when Assam was in crisis, during the period of partition, a ‘grouping formula’ was brought, under which an attempt was made to connect Assam with East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). That was the time when the very existence of Assam was in question. At that time Gopinath Bordoloi stood like a strong wall. He not only strongly opposed this formula, but also conveyed his message to Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel that Assam would never be separate. The first ‘Khevanhar’ of Assam In 1946, he became the Prime Minister (now called the Chief Minister) of Assam and was the first Chief Minister of the state after independence. But his challenge was not limited to politics only. Before him was a state which had to come out of the wounds of poverty, illiteracy and partition. He laid emphasis on education and culture. The ‘Guwahati University’ that we are seeing today is the result of his visionary thinking. Emotional memories of Amit Shah. Amit Shah rightly said in this event of 2025 that the life of Gopinath Bordoloi teaches us the lesson of patriotism. He was not just a politician, he was a social reformer who deeply believed in ‘Gandhian’ values. His simplicity was such that despite being in such great power, he always remained a servant of the public. In 1999, the Government of India honored his penance by awarding him ‘Bharat Ratna’, which he should have received much earlier. A mirror of reality: Often in the pages of history, the heroes of the North-East did not get the place they deserved. But now times are changing. Today, when Assam is on a new path of development, remembering the ‘popular’ Gopinath Bordoloi, the person who laid its foundation, is not just a formality, but it is our duty as citizens. We have to tell our children that the war on the border is not won only by bullets, sometimes our land is also saved by strong will and unbreakable pen. Gopinath Bordoloi is the name of that willpower of Assam.
