Why did Lion Ajit reject Amitabh Bachchan’s Deewar? Son Shehzad Khan revealed years old secret
News India Live, Digital Desk: In the history of Bollywood, ‘Deewar’ is a film which immortalized Amitabh Bachchan as ‘Angry Young Man’. But do you know that the makers’ first choice for a very important character in this film was the legendary villain Ajit, popularly known as ‘Lion’? Recently, his son and actor Shehzad Khan made a shocking revelation as to why his father had refused to be a part of this cult classic film. Ajit wanted a major change in the ending of the story i.e. ‘Climax’ of the film. Why did he reject the offer from Yash Chopra and Salim-Javed? The character ‘Samanth’ (who brings Vijay into the world of smuggling) played by Madan Puri in the film ‘Deewar’, was actually offered to Ajit. According to Shehzad Khan, when director Yash Chopra and writer duo Salim-Javed approached Ajit with this role, he heard the entire script. Ajit liked his character, but the ending of the film upset him. Ajit believed that seeing Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan), whom he nurtured and raised, dying was not in line with the image of his character. Ajit was adamant at the climax, did not agree. Ajit wanted that in the last scene of the film, when Amitabh Bachchan’s character (Vijay) is dying, his character should be present there and Vijay should die in his arms. Ajit’s argument was that this would deepen the emotional drama of the film. However, Salim-Javed and Yash Chopra were completely clear about the script they had written. They wanted Vijay to die in the lap of his mother (Nirupa Roy), because the entire film was built around ‘mother’. Due to this conflict of ideas, Ajit said ‘no’ to this big film. He had no regrets about leaving ‘Deewar’. Shahzad Khan said that his father was firm on his principles. He rejected the film, but later when ‘Deewar’ was released and became a super-duper hit, he had no regrets. Ajit believed that an actor should not compromise with the dignity of his character and the logic of the story. Later this role was played by Madan Puri and he also made it memorable with his acting. At that time, Ajit was keeping himself busy with his famous ‘Mona Darling’ and ‘Smart Villain’ image. Even today, the stories of ‘Lion’ remain in the news. Ajit was one of the few villains of Bollywood who gave ‘class’ and ‘style’ to the villain. His style of dialogue delivery is still the first choice of mimicry artists. His son Shehzad Khan often shares interesting stories related to his father. This new revelation related to ‘Deewar’ is no less than a surprise for film lovers. This shows how serious the actors of that era were about the weight of their role and the impact of the story.
