Why did Mohammad Rafi keep his children away from singing? You will be surprised to know the thoughts of the veteran singer
New Delhi . Whenever great singers are mentioned in the history of Indian film music, Mohammed Rafi’s name will be taken at the top. With his melodious voice and versatile singing style, he ruled the hearts of music lovers for decades. Be it romantic songs, painful songs or patriotic songs, Rafi Sahab left his indelible mark in every style. But a question related to his life has always arisen in people’s minds that why his children did not make singing their career.
Mohammad Rafi had a total of seven children. His first marriage was to Bashira, with whom he had a son, Saeed. He later married Bilkis Bano, with whom he had three sons and three daughters. Despite coming from such a big musical family, none of his children entered the world of professional singing. The reason behind this was the thinking of Rafi Sahab himself.
In the book ‘Mohammad Rafi: My Abba’ written on Mohammad Rafi, his daughter-in-law Yasmin Khalid has discussed this topic in detail. According to him, Rafi Saheb never wanted his children to enter the music world only on the basis of his name and legacy. He believed that it is not easy to reach the position he had reached on the basis of his hard work, dedication and talent. They feared that their children would always be compared to them and that this pressure could become a burden for them.
According to Yasmin, Rafi Sahab tried to give a normal life to his children from the beginning. They educated him in boarding schools and kept him away from the glitter and glamor of the music world. He wanted his children to move forward in life as per their choice and ability, and not choose a path under the pressure of their father’s identity.
Rafi Sahab’s simplicity was as famous as his singing. It is said that he used to wake up every morning at five o’clock and do Riyaaz regularly. He liked a simple life and liked to eat home-cooked food. Maintaining distance from the media was also included in his habits. He believed that he was an ordinary person and had no sensational story to tell.
Although the life of this great music star was extremely successful, his personal life was full of humility and discipline. This was the reason why he never burdened his children with his identity. He gave them the freedom to live an independent life and choose their own path.
Mohammad Rafi died of a heart attack on 31 July 1980 at the age of just 55. The news of his demise plunged the entire country into mourning. Despite heavy rain, thousands of people had come to bid him last farewell. This scene was proof that Rafi Sahab was not only a great singer but also the heartbeat of millions of hearts.
Even today, Mohammed Rafi’s songs are on people’s lips and his voice is alive in the hearts of music lovers. Even though his children did not take up singing as a profession, Rafi Sahab’s legacy is still counted among the most precious heritage of the Indian music world.
