Why did RR buy Vaibhav Suryavanshi? The cricketer himself told the inside story

Vaibhav Suryavanshi created a sensation by scoring a century in 35 balls in the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He became the batsman to score the lowest T20 century. Rajasthan Royals bought him in the IPL 2025 mega auction at the age of 13. This young player from Bihar told during the BCCI Naman Awards 2026 on Sunday (15 March) that the scouting team of Rajasthan Royals was keeping an eye on him for a long time.

 

Vaibhav said, ‘Ever since I made my debut in domestic cricket, Rajasthan Royals were keeping an eye on my domestic and under-19 matches. Their scouting team was watching me for a long time. My trial went very well with them so I thought I can go with Rajasthan Royals. He further said, ‘I am happy playing with Rajasthan Royals, because my life has improved a lot while playing here.’

‘Learned a lot from Rahul sir…’

Vaibhav also told that he has learned a lot from veteran Rahul Dravid and senior players of the team. He said, ‘The first IPL camp is always interesting for any young player and it was the same with me. At that time Rahul Dravid sir was there so I got to learn a lot from him. There were many senior players in the team and I got a lot of learning experience from them in the first camp as well as in the first IPL.

Focus is on winning IPL

Vaibhav, who became the Under-19 World Cup champion at the age of just 14, said that his next target is to win the trophy for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026. This destructive left-handed batsman had scored 175 runs in 80 balls against England in the final of the Under-19 World Cup last month and played an important role in Team India’s title victory. Now his entire focus is on IPL. Vaibhav said, ‘My target in this IPL season is to win the trophy for the team because it is very important. I want to perform well so that the entire team benefits from my innings. My aim is to contribute to the victory of Rajasthan Royals and win the trophy for the franchise.

 

Vaibhav, famous for his aggressive batting, also met his World Cup winning teammates at the awards ceremony. He said, ‘It feels very good.’ Also won the trophy for India in the World Cup. It feels great to meet my teammates and coaches here again because of this awards ceremony.
