Sensex fell during Kumbh Mela
Semco Securities has presented an interesting example of the behavior of the Indian stock market during the Maha Kumbh Mela. Apoorva Seth, Head of Market Perspectives and Research at Semco Securities, analyzes Shebjar’s performance over the last 20 years. In which Kumbh Mela was celebrated six times. The report shows that on all these six occasions, the returns of BSE’s flagship index Sensex have been negative from the beginning to the end of the Kumbh Mela. During the 52 days of Kumbh Mela, Sensex saw a decline of 3.4 percent.
When did the Sensex fall?
- The biggest fall in Sensex came during the Kumbh Mela of 2015.
- Subsequently, the BSE benchmark index fell 8.3 per cent from July 2015 to September 2015.
- The second biggest decline was recorded during the Kumbh period of April 2021. Meanwhile, the Sensex fell by 4.2 percent.
- Talking about the lowest fall, the Sensex fell by 1.2 percent during the Kumbh Mela in 2010.
- A decline of 1.3 percent was seen during the 2013 Kumbh Mela.
- There was a decline of 2.4 percent during the Kumbh Mela in April 2016. This means that in the last 20 years there has been no such occasion during the Kumbh Mela when the Sensex has returned positively.

of Kumbh Mela Positive returns after 6 months
Apoorva Seth of Semco Securities said that in the six months after the Kumbh Mela, the Sensex gave positive returns 5 times out of 6. An average return of 8 percent was seen in the six-month period after the Kumbh Mela. This is the biggest jump after Kumbh Mela 2021. , Then the Sensex had risen by about 29 percent. Whereas during the year 2010, a good growth of 16.8 percent was seen in Sensex. However, after the 2015 Kumbh Mela the BSE benchmark index posted a negative return of 2.5 per cent.
