Why did Trump snub Nikki Haley? GOP Rep Elise Stefanik is new pick for US envoy to UN- The Week

Donald Trump has picked GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik as the US envoy to the United Nations, according to sources quoted by local outlets.

Why did Trump snub Nikki Haley?

Stefanik’s name is making the rounds after Trump said he “will not be inviting” Nikki Haley back. Following this, Haley offered congratulations to Trump and did not respond to her omission.

She had served as the US ambassador to the UN during the first Trump administration. Haley, who is the South Carolina Governor, ran against Trump during the primary campaign. She was the last opponent to withdraw from the Republican presidential race.

Earlier, she wrote in the Wall Street Journal, “I don’t agree with Mr Trump 100% of the time. But I do agree with him most of the time, and I disagree with Ms. Harris nearly all the time. That makes this an easy call.”

Haley notably supported US aid to Ukraine which Trump opposed. She had also slammed Trump for alienating women and minorities over his misogynistic and racist comments. Haley’s campaign even called Trump a “chicken” for avoiding debates.

Who is Elise Stefanik?

The New York Congresswoman is the House Republican Conference chair and is counted among the top fundraisers for the GOP. She is known for backing Trump when he made false allegations about election fraud when he was defeated by Joe Biden in 2020.

In the run up to the 2024 presidential elections, Stefanik was one of the contenders to become Trump’s pick for vice president. The Congresswoman is currently serving as a member of the Armed Committee on Intelligence.
