Why does the LGBTQ+ community celebrate Pride Month in June? There is a very interesting history behind this!

Every year, when the month of June begins, the world sees a burst of colorful colors. This month is celebrated as ‘Pride Month’ for the Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBTQ+) community. Although today the celebration seems to be one of joy and freedom, it has its origins in a very tumultuous, painful and unjust history.

Stonewall Riots: That Black History

The traces of this history are rooted in 1969 New York City, USA. At that time, homosexuality was considered a crime by law. Homosexuals or transgender people had no right to live openly in society. A bar called the ‘Stonewall Inn’ in New York was the right place for this community to gather.

On the night of June 28, 1969, the New York police raided the bar. The police brutally beat the transgenders and homosexuals there and started arresting them. The community, which endured years of harassment, social stigma and police injustice, lost its patience. They staged an on-the-spot revolt against this repression by the police.

The first spark of revolution

Marsha P. A black transgender woman named Johnson and her colleagues raised their first voice against this injustice. This was not just a one night incident, but for the next 6 consecutive days violent protests and clashes continued on the streets. This event is known in history as ‘Stonewall Riots’. This movement transformed the worldwide gay rights movement overnight and sparked the first spark of a revolution.

Why June?

Next year, on June 28, 1970, the first ‘Pride March’ (Pride Movement) was held in America to pay tribute to this historical rebellion of Stonewall and the struggle of its martyrs. Gradually, the movement became global and the entire month of June, when the fight began, was declared as ‘Pride Month’.

In short, today’s Pride Month is not just a month of dancing and celebration, but for the LGBTQ+ community, it is a living history of the sacrifices and bloody struggle of the ancestors who shed blood for existence, dignity and equal rights.
