Know why Indian women are afraid of spending on themselves and how to change this mindset

Overview: Know why Indian women do not spend on themselves

Why do Indian women shy away from spending on themselves?

Indian Woman Guilt Trap: Have you ever noticed that we Indian women spend on everything without thinking? We do not hesitate at all in spending on home, children, parents or festivals. But as soon as it comes to ourselves, we stop somewhere. The only thought in the mind is why to spend so much money unnecessarily or what is the need for it. Even if we accidentally buy shoes or cream of our choice, we feel guilty later that something else could have been done with this money. Actually, the issue here is not about money, but about mentality. We have been taught since childhood that a good girl or a good woman is one who adjusts, sacrifices, and puts her own needs last.

In such a situation, we start considering self-care as a luxury whereas in reality it is a basic need. A woman starts ignoring herself while taking care of everyone and then frustration and burnout become normal. So today we will know why Indian women are afraid of spending on themselves, and what can be done to change this mindset-

First of all, we will talk about the reasons due to which an Indian woman hesitates in spending money on herself-

First of all, girls are taught since childhood that they have to take care of their family and others first and themselves later. Because of which, over time, even basic self-care seems like selfishness.

Generally women have a sense of guilt related to money. Many women, while spending on themselves, feel that this money will bring something to the house or that they will be able to manage even without it. In such a situation, they find it unnecessary to spend on themselves, even if it is affordable.

Women’s economic dependence also prevents them from spending on themselves. Apart from this, their conditioning also matters a lot. Even working women often grow up hearing the advice not to spend too much or to save for the future. Therefore, it becomes a matter of saving money for them.

Women often fear judgment. There is a thought in their mind about what people will say or what was the need for it. This fear gradually stops women from choosing themselves.

Conclusion

Generally women feel guilty in spending on themselves, but this thinking can be changed gradually-

Understand that spending on yourself is not a waste. Spending on good clothes, skincare, therapy, books, fitness etc. are investments, not luxuries.

Always start small. You don’t need to do big shopping. Buy yourself a coffee, a nice shirt, or a skincare product you love. Tell yourself that I deserve it.

Set a budget for yourself. Keep a budget of only ₹500-₹1000 for yourself every month. You do not need to give any kind of explanation for this and do not have any kind of guilt in your mind for this.

Change the way you talk to yourself. Instead of saying ‘money is being wasted’ say ‘I am taking care of myself’. Words matter more than we think.
