Why 21 June Chosen: International Yoga Day is celebrated all over the world on 21st June, but do you know the truth behind this day and date? Due to the efforts of PM Modi, ten years ago today, on 11 December 2014, a historic proposal regarding yoga was made in the United Nations General Assembly. Here in the special proposal, Yoga was described as a science which makes human life balanced, healthy and complete. This initiative of PM Modi got support from people all over the world.

It is being told that, within 90 days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations made a historic announcement regarding Yoga. It is said that as per the announcement made by the United Nations on December 11, June 21 was declared ‘International Yoga Day’. Since then, International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on 21st June in different corners of the world. On this occasion, leaders from all over the world publicly participate in the yoga program. It is reported that, it is considered to be one of the fastest passing resolutions in the history of the United Nations. India presented Yoga to the world not just as an exercise method, but as a holistic philosophy of life, balancing body, mind and soul.

Why was June 21 chosen?

Even though the proposal was made for Yoga Day on 11th December, why was 21st June chosen to celebrate International Yoga Day. It is being told that there is an important scientific aspect behind the International Yoga Day celebrated every year on 21st June. This is the longest day of the year and on June 21, the Sun starts moving from Uttarayan to Dakshinayan. It is considered a symbol of energy and stability in Indian tradition. That is why this date was chosen to celebrate International Yoga Day.

When was it celebrated for the first time

It is being told that for the first time International Yoga Day was celebrated on 21 June 2015, more than 190 countries of the world participated in this special day. Yoga Day has been celebrated with great pomp as a special day in India. A huge celebration was organized at Rajpath in Delhi, in which more than 35,000 people created a world record by practicing yoga together. Since then, the theme of International Yoga Day is decided every year and millions of people across the world from different age groups and backgrounds actively participate in it.
