Why is Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar going to Rajya Sabha?

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is now preparing to go to Rajya Sabha. This step is not just a change of post but is being considered as a new chapter in his political journey. The main reasons behind his decision are considered to be his health, desire for a less active role and preparation for change of leadership in the party.

Patna: Nitish Kumar has remained at the center of Bihar politics for the last 20 years. Governments changed, alliances kept changing, elections kept coming and going, but except for a short period, Nitish Kumar remained on the Chief Minister’s chair. This leader, who has been giving direction to the politics of Bihar since 2005, has now started preparations to go to Rajya Sabha.

With this step, a big change is going to come in the politics of the state. If we look at the election data and political movements of the past years, the story becomes even more interesting and complex, because power and coalition politics in Bihar has always been dynamic.

Nitish Kumar: Center of Bihar politics for two decades

Nitish Kumar has been a prominent name in Bihar politics for the last 20 years. Nitish Kumar, who has been guiding the governments of Bihar since 2005, has held the post of Chief Minister continuously. Although alliances changed from time to time, his political hold always remained strong. After the 2020 assembly elections, BJP became the largest party in the NDA. Despite this, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar remained. There are two major reasons behind this:

Social base and vote bank: Nitish Kumar made a strong hold among the Extremely Backward Class (EBC) and women voters in Bihar. Policies like prohibition and welfare schemes for women made him a trustworthy and popular leader. This vote bank is considered important for the victory of the alliance in Bihar.

Trust and experience in alliance: After the 2020 results, the BJP leadership, especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, had made it clear that Nitish would remain the Chief Minister. This was a strong message for coalition politics and stability of Bihar.

Why Rajya Sabha?

According to reports, at the age of 75, Nitish Kumar now wants to choose a less demanding role. Rajya Sabha can prove to be a respectable and influential platform for him. Apart from this, this step is also a preparation for leadership transition in the party. There is talk that Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar may soon enter active politics. With his arrival, the future of the party will be secure and a smooth change of leadership will be possible in the presence of Nitish.

At the same time, opposition RJD is looking at this step from a different perspective. RJD leaders claim that BJP is gradually sidelining Nitish Kumar. There is also discussion in the political circles that if the post of Chief Minister becomes vacant, then BJP will get a chance to make its Chief Minister in Bihar. This will further strengthen BJP’s control over the government.
