Where is digging considered auspicious?

In Vastu Shastra, special importance is also given to the direction of excavation. According to the rules, it is considered auspicious to start the digging work from the north-east corner. After this it is extended towards south-east, north-west and finally south-west direction. Why is Vaastu Puja necessary three times?
