Why is Myanmar’s President in Delhi? Min Aung Hlaing’s India visit puts regional ties in focus

Myanmar President Senior General Min Aung Hlaing arrived in New Delhi on Friday, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between India and its strategically important eastern neighbour. Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh welcomed the Myanmar leader upon his arrival and highlighted the deep-rooted historical, cultural and people-to-people ties that continue to shape relations between the two countries.

Sharing details of the visit, Kirti Vardhan Singh said he was honoured to receive President Min Aung Hlaing in the national capital. He noted that the visit reflects the enduring civilisational links between India and Myanmar and provides an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors.

“His visit underscores the enduring civilisational, cultural and people-to-people ties between India and Myanmar. It also provides an opportunity to further strengthen our partnership across diverse sectors and advance our shared vision for regional peace, prosperity and connectivity,” the minister said.

The visit comes at a time when India is actively working to enhance connectivity and economic integration with Southeast Asia through its Act East Policy. Myanmar occupies a crucial position in this strategy as it serves as India’s land bridge to the ASEAN region. Several key infrastructure and connectivity projects linking India and Myanmar are already under development, including road, trade and border connectivity initiatives aimed at boosting regional commerce and mobility.

India and Myanmar also share a long land border spanning more than 1,600 kilometres, making bilateral cooperation important for border management, security coordination and trade. Over the years, the two countries have collaborated on issues ranging from infrastructure development and capacity building to healthcare, education and disaster management.

The visit is also expected to provide an opportunity for discussions on regional stability, connectivity projects and economic cooperation. Analysts view Myanmar as a critical partner in India’s efforts to strengthen engagement with Southeast Asia while ensuring stability along its northeastern frontier.

India has consistently maintained engagement with Myanmar despite political changes in the neighbouring country, emphasizing the importance of dialogue, development partnerships and regional cooperation. The two nations are linked not only by geography but also by centuries-old cultural and religious connections, particularly through the shared heritage of Buddhism.

The arrival of President Min Aung Hlaing signals continued diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Naypyidaw at a time when regional connectivity, economic cooperation and strategic partnerships remain high on the agenda. Officials believe the visit could help inject fresh momentum into bilateral ties and advance ongoing initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation across a range of sectors.
