Why is no OTT platform ready to release Bhumi Pednekar's film?: The Lady Killer

The Lady Killer: Film production in India is an expensive business. From production to casting and VFX, the cost of big films runs into several crores of rupees in most industries. The bigger the star, the bigger the budget. But even when a big star promises returns on this investment, it often does not happen. The trouble is, there's no guarantee of that return, as this one movie proves. Made on a budget of Rs 45 crore, the film remains India's biggest flop ever, earning just Rs 60,000. This loss is the biggest loss in the history of Indian cinema.

Ajay Bahl's ill-fated 2023 film The Lady Killer has got the tag of being India's biggest box office flop. Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar starred in this film and it was a crime thriller. Produced by Bhushan Kumar under his T-Series banner, the film began production in 2022. Reports suggested that the film's budget increased due to multiple reshoots in 2023. Its cost was 45 crores. However, upon release, it did not find any takers, with only 293 tickets sold across India on its first day.

Reports have claimed that The Lady Killer was released incomplete, with the climax also not being completely shot. The film's director Ajay Bahl initially supported this claim in an interview, but later retracted his statement. However, the fact remains that The Lady Killer got only a token release in a handful of theaters in India in November 2023. This was because the makers had signed a deal with OTT platform Netflix for its streaming release in December. For this, the film required a theatrical release in the first week of November, failing which the streaming deal would have been invalidated. Reports suggest that the makers felt it was better to release a token and then secure an OTT release. This is the reason why the film 'Adhuri' was released without any promotion.
