Why is the stock market closed on May 1? See NSE BSE Holiday List 2026- The Week

The Indian stock markets are closed for trading on May 1, Friday, on account of Maharashtra Day. This year, the day also coincides with Buddha Purnimaor Buddha Jayanti.

The Sensex closed on Thursday for the week after falling more than 582 points to settle at 76,913.50, due to the surge in Brent crude prices. The Nifty also settled at 23,997.55, shedding at least 180 points.

On the first of May in 1960, the Bombay Reorganisation Act was enacted, creating two new states out of the erstwhile Bombay State. These were Maharashtra and Gujarat. The day is also celebrated as Gujarat Sthapana Divas.

May will have one more bourse holiday, on May 28, for Bakrid.
