How did International Yoga Day start? (History)
World Yoga Day was started when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on 27 September 2014, while explaining the benefits of yoga, demanded to celebrate it on 21 June every year.
At that time, most of the members of the United Nations had given their consent to this, this proposal was passed with majority within 3 months on 11 December 2014 and after this 21 June was declared as International Day of Yoga.
Why is Yoga Day celebrated only on 21st June?
In his address to the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Modi said that June 21 is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, because on this day the sun rises early and sets late. And during this time Summer Solstice is also celebrated in India.
Apart from this, due to Dakshinayan, this day is also considered very beneficial for attaining spiritual attainments. This is the reason due to which June 21 was chosen to celebrate International Yoga Day.
