Why Rajat Patidar’s low-profile leadership is working perfectly for RCB

Few captains in the IPL stay out of the spotlight. Still, Rajat Patidar at Royal Challengers Bengaluru leads without drawing eyes. Though he lifted RCB to their first-ever title last year, then reached another final in 2026, attention sticks elsewhere. Through it all, Virat Kohli holds the glare. Leading hard while staying quiet seems to be his way. Not loud, yet always there when needed most.

Rajat Patidar lit up Qualifier 1 with a blistering knock that few saw coming. Hitting 93 runs from only 33 deliveries, he dragged Bengaluru towards another IPL final appearance. That innings stood tall even amid the usual noise that follows RCB. Most talk still orbits Kohli, his bat work, fiery reactions between overs, or that heated exchange recently with Travis Head, catching endless replays.

The Virat Kohli factor behind Rajat Patidar’s Success

Surprisingly, Virat Kohli’s huge shadow might just give Patidar room to grow at the front. While others like Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, or Ruturaj Gaikwad coped heavy heat when things went south, Rajat Patidar stayed mostly out of the storm. What looks like a spotlight on one man ends up hiding another.

Out in the shadow of Kohli’s spotlight, Patidar stayed steady, shaping choices behind the scenes while keeping distractions at bay. Because of that space, he grew sharper with each game – batting calm, leading quiet, until something rare clicked: two straight finals under his name, a first for RCB. Then came the moment few saw coming, but everyone noticed.
From the moment he was named captain, Rajat Patidar had Virat Kohli speaking up for him. That shift wasn’t missed by anyone inside the locker room.

Calmness under pressure, that’s what the ex-RCB leader highlighted. He also pointed out sharp decision-making in tight spots. Those words carried weight, settling doubts fast. Respect followed quickly, built not through speeches but quiet nods and shared glances during meetings.

These days, RCB’s cricket director Mo Bobat points out that Patidar’s character is shaping up as a key reason he leads well. What stands out isn’t just skill, it’s who he is. Leadership, it turns out, flows more from manner than metrics.

His presence alone shifts the room. Not loud, but steady. People notice without being told. A calm way of speaking does more than speeches. The role fits because he stays himself under pressure. Moments define captains more than plans. He listens before stepping forward.

“In terms of his captaincy, you’re right. He’s a very calm individual. It’s one of the things that stood out last year as well. With every game he captains, he gets more and more experience, and that will only add to his confidence and resilience under pressure,” Bobat said after the Qualifier win.

“He keeps things pretty simple. He’s somebody who wants to focus on doing his job when he gets on the field, and he’s pretty relaxed with everything off the field. He’s very good at managing his own energy, which is serving him well right now because he’s saving his energy for his batting and also for when he needs to get his tactics right out in the middle,” he added.

Virat Kohli burns bright under every light, his energy never fading. Meanwhile, Rajat Patidar moves without noise, steady and sure through each moment. One flares fast, the other holds ground – different rhythms finding common ground. This mix of heat and stillness keeps Bangalore rising, closer than before. The trophy feels closer now, pulled by contrast rather than sameness.
