Why Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set for a pay cut

NEW DELHI: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s annual contract salary is set to see a significant decline, with both Indian stalwarts expected to be demoted from Grade A+ to Grade A, Sportstak reported. The move is attributed to the fact that both players now feature only in ODIs following their retirements from Tests and T20Is.

Players placed in Grade A+ are those who are active in two or all three formats. The new contracts are likely to be announced in the next day or two.

The report further added that India’s ODI and Test captain, Shubman Gill, will be promoted from Grade A to Grade A+. The other two players currently in the A+ category are Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah.

Ishan Kishan eyes contract return

Ishan Kishan is set to make a return to India’s central contract list after a prolonged absence, with the left-hander likely to be placed in the Grade B category alongside Shreyas Iyer. Both players had been dropped from the contracts in 2024 following disciplinary issues.

While the Punjab Kings captain was reinstated last year, Kishan had to wait longer for his recall. His return has been fueled by standout performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025–26, which have not only strengthened his case for a central contract but also earned him a spot in India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad.

The BCCI Central Contracts for 2024-25 feature four salary tiers:

  • Grade A+ players earn Rs 7 crore
  • Grade A players get Rs 5 crore
  • Grade B players receive Rs 3 crore
  • Grade C players get Rs 1 crore
