WI vs ENG: Englishmen blown away by Rutherford’s storm, West Indies’ second consecutive win

The 15th match of ICC T20 World Cup 2026 was played between West Indies and England at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. West Indies won this match by 30 runs. This was the second consecutive win for the two-time champion Caribbean team and it has reached the top of Group B. At the same time, the net run rate of the England team, which had lost against Nepal in Wankhede itself, has become very bad after this defeat. The English team had a chance to come first by defeating West Indies but at present it will remain at third position below Scotland.

 

When invited to bat first in the match, West Indies scored a strong score of 196 runs at the loss of 6 wickets, in which Sherfane Rutherford had the biggest contribution. Ruthford played an unbeaten inning of 76 runs in 42 balls, hitting 2 fours and 7 sixes, due to which West Indies set a big target. In response, the entire England team was reduced to 166 in 19 overs.

Sam Karan had to be alone

The England team had made a stormy start while chasing the target. Phil Salt batted brilliantly and took England to 37 runs in just 3 overs. Romario Shepherd, who came with the fourth over, gave a big success to West Indies by making him his victim on the second ball. Salt scored 30 runs in 14 balls. After his dismissal, Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethel took charge and took England to 67/1 by the end of the powerplay. The English team was looking strong but it lost the wickets of Butler (21) and Tom Banton (2) in the next two overs. From here, West Indies started tightening their grip and reduced England to half their innings till the score of 131.

 

Sam Curran, who came at number six, held one end but was left alone. Karan remained unbeaten after scoring 43 runs in 30 balls and all the batsmen from the other end returned to the pavilion one by one. For West Indies, Gudakesh Moti took 3 wickets for 33 runs in 4 overs. Roston Chase gave 29 runs in 4 overs and took 2 wickets in his bag. Akil Hussain, Shepherd and Shamar Joseph got one success each.

Holder-Radford’s innings made the match

Earlier, West Indies, who came to bat first after losing the toss, also did not have a good start. He lost 3 wickets in the powerplay itself. Shimron Hetmyer seemed to be in a dangerous mood but he remained within the powerplay after scoring 23 runs in 12 balls. Roston Chase was out on a total score of 77 after scoring 34 runs in 29 balls. Rovman Powell (14 runs in 13 balls) also could not last long. West Indies’ score was 128/5 in 14.2 overs. From here, Ruthford took the lead and along with Jason Holder (33 runs in 17 balls) made a partnership of 61 runs in 32 balls and took West Indies to a fightable score, which proved to be like a mountain for England.
