This is only the second time in New Zealand cricket history that a Kiwi opener has put on a first wicket partnership of 300 or more. Earlier in 1972, Terry Jarvis and Glenn Turner had achieved the alchemy of 387 runs for the first wicket in the Georgetown Test match against the West Indies.

Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie hold the world record for the longest partnership for the first wicket in Tests. In the Chittagong Test against Bangladesh in 2008, the pair put on a 415-run first-wicket partnership.

World Record in WTC

Tom Latham and Devon Conway have achieved the feat of creating the world record for the highest opening partnership in World Test history. Earlier, this record was held by Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal. The duo had put on a 317-run opening partnership for the first wicket in Visakhapatnam Test against South Africa in 2019. Now Tom Latham and Devon Conway have broken this record by making a partnership of 323 runs for the first wicket.

Highest opening partnership in New Zealand

Tom Latham and Devon Conway set a new record for the highest opening partnership in a Test match in New Zealand. The previous record of 276 runs was held by Stevie Dempster and Jackie Mills (New Zealand v England in Wellington in 1930) and Sherwin Campbell and Adrian Griffiths (Wellington v New Zealand in Hamilton in 1999).

Captain Tom Latham has completed his 15th Test century and his fifth century as captain. Along with him, Devon Conway also scored a brilliant century. Latham retired with 137 runs off 246 balls. Tom Latham hit 15 fours and a six in his innings, while Devon Conway remains unbeaten on 178 runs.
