Will Ajit Pawar give a blow to Mahayuti in Maharashtra? Contact with Congress for Pune civic elections

Pune: Political activities have intensified in Maharashtra regarding the upcoming Pune Municipal Corporation elections. There are signs of new equations being formed in the politics of the state. In this context, the initiative taken by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, part of the ruling Grand Alliance, regarding a possible alliance with the Congress has heated up the discussion in political circles.

Ajit Pawar talks with Congress

According to sources, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar spoke to senior Congress leader Satej Patil on phone late on Sunday night. The main issue of this conversation was the possible coordination between the two parties in the Pune Municipal Corporation elections. It is being told that Ajit Pawar proposed to contest elections together with Congress, discuss seat sharing and joint election strategy.

However, Congress leader Satej Patil did not give any immediate consent on this. He clearly said that any decision can be taken on this subject only after extensive discussion within the party. Congress’s priority is to get a respectable share in the 165-seat council of Pune Municipal Corporation.

The Congress leadership seems to be very cautious about this possible alliance. The party believes that municipal elections are not only a question of local power, but are also very important for the upcoming assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Congress leaders say that if the party makes a weak compromise here, it can have a direct impact on the grassroots organization and support base.

Congress is also reminding that under the seat sharing formula of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), Pune Lok Sabha seat comes in Congress’s share. In such a situation, it is considered strategically important for the party to perform strongly in the Pune Municipal Corporation elections.

The path of alliance is not easy

Political sources say that the path to a possible alliance between Ajit Pawar and Congress is not easy. Congress seems to be in no mood to compromise on fewer seats under any circumstances. The party has a clear stand that it does not want just nominal participation but respectable seat sharing.

On the other hand, it is also considered almost certain that Bharatiya Janata Party and Ajit Pawar faction’s NCP will contest the Pune Municipal Corporation elections separately. In such a situation, coordination with Congress has emerged as an important political option for Ajit Pawar.

Many options open before Congress

Interestingly, Congress is not considering only the proposal of Ajit Pawar’s NCP at present. The party is also in continuous talks with its traditional allies Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) and Sharad Pawar’s NCP (SP). In such a situation, the election strategy of Congress seems to be oscillating between many possibilities.

Political analysts believe that Congress will take the final decision only after careful consideration, so that its position in future politics is not weakened. The party is also looking at which alliance can benefit it the most in a big urban area like Pune.

Increased stir in Maharashtra politics

This initiative of Ajit Pawar has given rise to new speculations in Maharashtra politics. Pune Municipal Corporation elections are no longer just local body elections, but they are becoming a contest that will decide the direction of the state’s politics in the times to come. In the coming days, it will become clear whether these talks between Congress and NCP take the form of a solid alliance or not.
