Will Contest 2027 Punjab Elections from Gidderbaha Too: Sukhbir Badal
Gidderbaha, December 12, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)
The president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, Sukhbir Singh Badal, on Monday announced that he will also contest the 2027 Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections from Gidderbaha, in addition to another constituency.
Sukhbir Badal made this announcement while addressing a gathering on the birth anniversary of his father, former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. Paying tribute to his father, he recalled his long political journey and deep association with the Malwa region.
Gidderbaha has traditionally been considered a stronghold of the Akali Dal. Parkash Singh Badal had earlier represented the seat, and later Manpreet Singh Badal, another prominent member of the family, also won the constituency.
However, the political equations in Gidderbaha changed during the 2024 by-election, which was necessitated after the resignation of Amarinder Singh Raja Warring following his victory in the Ludhiana parliamentary election. In that by-poll, Akali leader Hardeep Singh Dimpy Dhillon switched sides, joined the Aam Aadmi Party, and won the seat by defeating Raja Warring’s wife Amrita Warring.
While Parkash Singh Badal remained loyal to the Lambi seat till his last days, Sukhbir Badal has traditionally contested and won elections from Jalalabad.
Political observers believe that Sukhbir Badal’s announcement indicates a strategy to contest the upcoming 2027 elections from two seats. They suggest that apart from Gidderbaha, he is likely to choose either Lambi or Jalalabad as his second constituency.
