Outcry across the country due to gas shortage, will LPG prices change from tonight? See latest rates here
LPG Crisis Amid Iran-Israel Tension: The impact of the tension that has been going on in the Middle East for 12 consecutive days has now started reaching India’s kitchen. Recently, oil companies have increased the prices of LPG cylinders, after which long queues of people are being seen outside gas agencies in many cities of the country. This issue also remained heated in Parliament on Wednesday (March 11), when the opposition raised slogans against the government and raised questions on rising inflation. The biggest question in the minds of common people is why LPG prices have increased and can they increase further.
Actually, this time the main reason for the increase in LPG prices is the ongoing war between Iran-Israel and America. Global gas and oil prices have risen due to tensions and supply disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz near Iran. This is the same sea route through which oil and gas are supplied to large parts of the world. As soon as the supply gets affected here, it directly impacts the international market and then import-dependent countries like India.
Why is LPG gas affected in India?
India fulfills a major part of its LPG needs from abroad. About 60% of the country’s LPG demand is met by imports. About 80-90% of these imports come from Middle-Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and UAE. In such a situation, if war or tension increases in this region, then a rise in LPG prices is considered almost certain. This is the reason why the effect of the recent crisis has started becoming visible on the prices of gas cylinders in India.
Government’s stance on LPG cylinder
However, the government has told people there is no need to panic. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri says that the supply of gas to domestic consumers will be completely ensured and no shortage will be allowed. The ministry has directed refineries to increase LPG production and has adopted a policy of giving priority to supply to domestic consumers. Besides, to prevent black marketing of gas, a gap of 25 days has also been fixed between cylinder booking.
Will LPG cylinder prices increase again?
However, experts believe that if Iran-Israel tension increases further or there is more disruption in oil-gas supply, then there may be pressure on LPG prices again in the coming months. At present, the government is trying to handle the situation through additional production and supply management, but the future price trend will depend to a great extent on the global situation.
