Will respond to enemies with 90 percent indigenous ammunition

New Delhi, January 1, 2026: ‘Operation Vermillion’ may have been successfully completed in four days in May 2025, but amidst the changing global circumstances, the Indian Army is now preparing itself for a long-term war. As part of this strategy, the Army has reduced its dependence on foreign ammunition. Now the Indian Army is using 90 percent indigenous ammunition, which is a historic achievement in the direction of ‘self-reliant India’.

  • Under ‘Make in India’ Rs. orders worth 16,000 crores

By making the military procurement process simple and competitive, domestic companies have come forward in the defense sector in a big way. Presently Rs. Orders worth Rs 16,000 crore are under process. In the last three years, Indian companies have received Rs. Orders for ammunition worth Rs 26,000 crore have been placed. The Indian Army uses about 200 types of ammunition and precision weapons, most of which are now made in India.

There was a time when the then Army Chief had written a letter to the government and warned that the army had only petrol and ammunition left to last for 10 days. However, India’s ‘war-reserve stores’ have increased manifold in the last 10 years. Earlier there was dependence only on the Government Ordnance Factory Board, but now more than 20 private companies like Adani Defence, Solar Industries, SMPP and Bharat Forge are manufacturing arms and ammunition for the army.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made it clear that any terrorist incident will now be considered like war and retaliatory strikes will be taken accordingly. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and the army leadership have also said that India has never been a party to war, but if India is provoked by an incident like the Pahalgam attack, then it will not give in to the enemy at any cost.

To prepare for a long-term war, big private companies manufacturing ammunition have been assured of continuous orders for the next 7 to 10 years. Due to this policy, confidence among investors and industries has increased. The Army is no longer limited to just modern weapons, but is also developing the logistics capability to conduct long-term military operations.
