Will Samrat Chaudhary become the first BJP Chief Minister of Bihar? Know the complete story of this powerful ‘Kushwaha’ leader from RJD to NDA
Country. A new era is about to begin in the politics of Bihar. There are discussions going on that for the first time in the state, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader is going to take over as the Chief Minister. The name that is being discussed the most in this race is Samrat Chaudhary. The special thing is that Samrat does not come from a born ‘BJP’ or Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) background. Despite this, the speed with which his political graph has gone up after joining BJP just 7 years ago is surprising everyone.
Before the announcement of the new Chief Minister, let us know every little thing related to the life and political journey of Samrat Chaudhary.
Birth in a political family and beginning with RJD-
Born on 16 November 1968, Samrat Chaudhary has inherited politics. His father, Shakuni Chaudhary, has been a big name in Bihar politics and was the prominent face of the ‘Kushwaha’ (Koeri) community when he founded the Samata Party with Nitish Kumar.
Samrat entered politics at a very young age. His major political time was spent with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). He has also held the post of minister in Lalu-Rabri rule. His elder brother Rohit Chaudhary is associated with JDU, while younger brother Dharmendra Chaudhary is a social worker.
Tarapur and Munger are the real identity-
This time Samrat Chaudhary has been elected MLA from Tarapur seat of Munger district in Bihar Assembly elections. He is originally a resident of Lakhanpur of this district. The influence of his father Shakuni Chaudhary is considered to be from Munger to Khagaria, and this political support base is also the biggest strength of Samrat Chaudhary.
Nitish’s choice and ‘Luv-Kush’ equation-
While Lalu Prasad Yadav’s politics focused on Yadavs, Nitish Kumar’s rise was based on the ‘Luv-Kush’ (Kurmi-Koeri) equation. Nitish himself comes from the Kurmi community, while Samrat Chaudhary is a Koeri (Kushwaha).
Interestingly, during the Grand Alliance government, Samrat Chaudhary had become the biggest critic of Nitish Kumar and had pledged that he would not remove the ‘Muretha’ (turban) from his head until Nitish was removed from the chair. But the tables of politics turned and when Nitish returned to NDA, Samrat became closest to him. Due to this ‘Luv-Kush’ equation, Samrat Chaudhary is being considered as Nitish Kumar’s first choice for the post of CM from BJP quota.
After Sushil Modi, Bihar becomes the main face of BJP-
In the year 2018, Samrat Chaudhary joined BJP. When Sushil Kumar Modi was sent to Delhi after the 2020 elections, a big void was created in the Bihar BJP. Samrat Chaudhary filled this void.
In 2019, when Nityanand Rai was the state president, Samrat was made his deputy.
In 2020 he became MLC.
In 2023, BJP made him the state president of Bihar.
When Nitish Kumar returned to the NDA in 2024, the BJP made Samrat the legislature party leader and deputy chief minister.
Has also been associated with controversies-
Samrat Chaudhary’s journey has not been untouched by controversies. In the initial phase, due to age dispute, he had to stay away from politics for some time. Later, when he started a new innings with BJP, there was controversy regarding the degree given in his affidavit. Election strategist Prashant Kishore had cornered him a lot on this issue in the last elections, although it had no significant impact on the election results.
Now it will be interesting to see whether Samrat Choudhary, who tied ‘Muretha’, is able to be crowned as the first Chief Minister of BJP in Bihar or not.
