Steve Smith has been officially included in Australia’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad in place of injured Josh Hazlewood. Hazlewood was ruled out of the competition with a calf injury, although the medical team initially expected him to be fit for the latter part of the tournament. Australia did not immediately name any replacement, but with Hazlewood out, the way has been cleared for Smith’s return to T20I form.
However, the 36-year-old Smith has not played any T20I match since February 2024 and last played in the T20 World Cup in the 2022 edition. In 14 innings of the T20 World Cup, he has scored just one fifty, with a strike rate of 111.76. Overall, Smith has 1094 runs in T20Is at a strike rate of 125.45, which includes five fifties. Now it will be interesting to see whether Smith lives up to the expectations in Pallekele or not?
