Will Suryakumar Yadav be removed from the captaincy or not? Akash Chopra replied, saying – maybe in the next six months…
Amid the celebrations of India’s recent T20 World Cup win, talk has intensified about the team’s future and Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy. After Mohammad Kaif, former Indian cricketer and renowned commentator Akash Chopra elaborated on the issue in his program “Aapki Vaani”. When asked if Surya should hold the captaincy until the 2028 World Cup, Chopra objected to the timing of the question. He simply said, “If you ask this question the day after you win the World Cup, don’t ask it because it seems a bit inappropriate.
He further said, “Somebody just won the World Cup, let it go for a while.” According to him, it is inappropriate to start a debate about the removal or retention of the captain immediately after the joy of victory. Akash Chopra feels that the target of 2028 is currently a long way off. He called it a bridge too far, because the world of cricket changes completely in four years.

“Personally, I think 2028 is a long way off and the world will look very different by then,” Chopra said. He also explained that age and fitness will be a major factor, as Surya is no longer young and a lot will depend on his future form. Hence, he refused to guarantee that Surya would remain the captain till 2028.
Talking about the future strategy, Chopra appreciated the clear thinking of the Indian selectors. He noted that two years ago, the selectors under Surya decided to go ahead. However, he also indicated that the process of change in Team India is ongoing. “Maybe in the next six months, you will know who we are leading to by 2028,” he said. They like the clarity they get from the selectors, where decisions about the team’s future are made over time.

Akash Chopra brought up a very important point, the game is always bigger than the player. He stressed that the interest of the team should always be paramount. “Surya can be part of that team, he can remain the captain, but someone else can think about the Indian team, the selectors can think about that and then take the team forward with them,” he said. He added, “Indian cricket is important; individuals will come and go.” His statement makes it clear that he is not against Surya’s captaincy, but is in favor of keeping the door open for future possibilities.
