Will Team India’s decline be a hindrance to the Olympics? How will the 2028 eligibility equation be?
- Succeeding defeats?
- Will the Olympics 2028 math be messed up?
- What are the rules for Olympic qualification?
The Indian team has carved its name in the T20 World Cup twice in a row. Team India has dominated T20 cricket for a long time. Since 2022, India has retained the top spot in the ICC T20 Team Rankings. However, the Indian cricket team’s performance under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer is being questioned due to the recent defeats of the Indian team. After losing the series against Ireland and then England, India is now on the verge of losing its top spot and this could also directly affect its qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Decline in performance will result in loss of eligibility
According to the rules issued by the ICC regarding men’s 2026 Olympic qualification, one top-ranked team each from Asia, Europe, Africa and Oceania will qualify directly, while the US has already qualified directly as the host country. After this, the top-ranked team from each continent will qualify directly until the end of 2026. The sixth team will be determined from the qualifying round. The Indian team is currently at the top of the T20 team rankings in Asia, but if the recent decline in performance continues, the team’s rankings may also fall. Pakistan can benefit in this situation. The Indian team is currently at the top of the T20 team rankings with a total of 269 rating points. On the other hand, Pakistan team is ranked sixth with a total of 240 rating points. In such a scenario, if the Indian team does not improve its performance and Pakistan does well by the end of the year, it could become the top-ranked team in Asia and get a direct qualification ticket for the 2028 Olympics.
What are the rules for Olympic qualification?
Cricket has been included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. According to the qualification rules, if the Indian men’s team wants to qualify directly for the Olympics, they will have to top the ICC T20 rankings among Asian teams till the end of 2026. The Indian cricket team, which is currently at the top of the ICC T20 team rankings, has almost cleared its way to direct qualification. However, after losing three matches in the ongoing five-match T20I series against England, the Indian team’s top spot is now under threat and tension has increased over direct qualification for the Olympics.
