Will the dream come true now? 4 days work a week, 3 days holiday, know the complete plan of the government
Four-day working week in India: A big and good news is coming for crores of Indian employees. The dream of four days work and three days leave can now come true. The Government of India has approved the implementation of this system under the new Labor Code. Let us understand this entire matter in simple words. What is the government’s plan? Recently, the Ministry of Labor and Employment has clarified that under the new Labor Code, the maximum working hours per week has been fixed at 48. This rule provides flexibility to companies in deciding the working days for their employees. If a company wants to adopt a system of 4 days work a week and 3 days off, it can do so. But there is a condition attached to it. 12-hour shift rule: According to the government, if an employee is given 3 days off in a week, he will have to work 12 hours a day in the remaining 4 days. Thus, a total of 48 hours of work (12 hours per day x 4 days) will be completed in 4 days. This 12-hour shift will also include the employee’s break time. This simply means that if your company wants, they can call you for 4 days, but then you will have to be ready to work for 12 hours a day. What about overtime? The Labor Ministry has also clarified that if a company makes an employee work more than 48 hours in a week, then he will have to pay double the salary (double payment) for overtime. This rule has been made to protect the interests of the employees. When did the new labor law come into force? The Central Government has implemented 4 new labor codes by repealing 29 old labor laws from 21 November 2025. The main objective of these codes is to protect the rights of employees and to provide ease of functioning of companies. These new codes are as follows: Wage Code, 2019 Industrial Relations Code, 2020 Social Security Code, 2020 Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 Will this rule be applicable to all companies? It is important to understand here that the government has not made this rule mandatory, but has given an option to the companies. Now it will depend on the company and the employees whether they want to work 5 days for 9 hours or 4 days for 12 hours and take 3 days off. Currently, experiments on this system are going on in countries like Japan, Spain and Germany and now the way has been opened for it in India also.
