Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has reconstituted the special ‘Inquiry Committee’ formed to investigate the corruption allegations against Justice Verma. After this change, now the layers of the case will be investigated under the supervision of new members. Why was the nature of the investigation committee changed? According to the Indian Constitution, the process of removing a judge from office is extremely complex and requires the approval of Parliament as well as an investigation by a judicial committee. What will happen next? The new committee will now analyze afresh the evidence, witnesses and documents against Justice Verma. Submission of report: After the completion of the investigation, the committee will submit its detailed report to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Discussion in Parliament: If the committee finds the allegations true, then impeachment can be done in both houses of the Parliament. The proposal can be discussed and voted on.
