Will the troubles of Justice Yashwant Verma, accused in the cash scandal, increase? Big change in the investigation committee, now these veterans will decide
News India Live, Digital Desk: A major development has come to light in the ‘Cash Scandal’ case related to former Allahabad High Court judge and current Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Verma. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has reconstituted the special ‘Inquiry Committee’ formed to investigate the corruption allegations against Justice Verma. After this change, now the layers of the case will be investigated under the supervision of new members. Why was the nature of the investigation committee changed? This investigation is going on under a serious process like impeachment against Justice Yashwant Verma. The need for reconstitution of the committee arose because some of the earlier members had either retired or were not available for other reasons. To maintain the impartiality and speed of the investigation, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha has now included new legal stalwarts in this panel. Who are included in the committee? Top level faces from the judiciary have been included in the reconstituted committee: Judges of the Supreme Court: The committee is usually chaired by a senior judge of the Supreme Court. Chief Justice of the High Court: The Chief Justice of any other High Court has also been included in the panel as a member.Reputed Jurist: An expert with deep knowledge in the field of law has also been made a part of this team. What is the whole matter (cash scandal)? Justice Yashwant Verma is accused of allegedly taking undue advantage while holding judicial post. After these allegations related to ‘cash for verdict’ or corruption, there was a demand for impeachment against him. According to the Indian Constitution, the process of removing a judge from office is extremely complex and requires the approval of Parliament as well as an investigation by a judicial committee. What will happen next? The new committee will now analyze afresh the evidence, witnesses and documents against Justice Verma. Submission of report: After the completion of the investigation, the committee will submit its detailed report to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Discussion in Parliament: If the committee finds the allegations true, then impeachment can be done in both houses of the Parliament. The proposal can be discussed and voted on. Career threat: If the charges are proved, it will be one of the rare cases in Indian judicial history where a High Court judge can be removed from office. For now, this rejig has created a stir in the legal circles and all eyes are now on the next hearing in this high-profile investigation.
