Will there be entry of a new team in IPL? A BCCI official gave a surprising update

New Delhi, 03 April 2026: IPL is one of the most watched sports tournaments in the world. Cricket excitement reaches a new level during the March-May period, with 10 IPL teams competing for the trophy. Till 2021, the number of teams in the Indian Premier League was eight, but now it has increased to ten. But what are the chances of increasing the number of teams in future? IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumle has presented his views in this matter.

According to reports, last year alone all the teams had earned an income of more than Rs 1000 crore. Recently, Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore teams were sold for more than Rs 15,000 crore. These figures prove that IPL is moving on its upward path in terms of revenue.

Will the number of IPL matches increase?

Regarding the possibility of increasing the number of matches in the IPL season from 74 to 94, Arun Singh Dhumal said that for this there will be a need to extend the duration of the tournament. According to the Financial Times, Arun Dhumal said that the international cricket schedule is predetermined, so only the period from March to mid-May is available.

He said, “With the beginning of June, the monsoon season begins in South India. Therefore, it is not possible to extend the duration of IPL at present. If the number of matches is increased from 74 to 94, then more double headers will have to be done, which is not good for the broadcasters.”

Will the number of teams increase?

IPL chairman had said that to increase the number of teams, the duration of the tournament will have to be extended. The IPL has generated significant income for everyone, but the number of teams cannot be increased unless the duration of the tournament is extended.
